I'm defending my dissertation tomorrow. Yikes!
If I survive, I'll post my thoughts when it's over.
**UPDATE**
It's over! I'm happy. :) Here's what I'm up to now.
1. Partying
2. Wrapping up a few loose ends
3. Enjoying my last month in Virginia (lots of windsurfing)
4. Going home to Washington State for a couple weeks in August
5. Moving to Florida to start my new job studying manatees (among other things)
Good luck, James. If things had gone differently for me, I might have been a marine biologist too. You have a great perspective on windsurfing and the environment.

Good luck James. I know you will do well. Your sister just got her MS diploma in the mail today. Pretty soon you will both be smarter than me. Dad
ReplyDeleteI, for one, hope you whoop some scientific ass tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!! So now I guess we have Dr. Douglass in the family. Enjoy your well-earned month off, & stop by to see Tom and me on your way to Florida.
ReplyDeleteLove, Aunt MG
Congratulations James, or should I say Dr :-).
ReplyDeleteVery happy for you Dr.James
ReplyDeleteI always said at 18 I knew everything and have been getting dummer ever since. But they can't take that DR. away from you.:) Maybe you can figure out why The Manties come to Texas where I live. Great going again:)
later
Frank
Nice job man. Enjoy your time off.
ReplyDeleteAttaboy!
ReplyDeleteWhere are you moving to in Florida? That's my home state - get ready to sail some hurricanes!
Thanks for the well-wishing, y'all. The place I'll be working at in Florida is the Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce. I'm looking forward to the near-misses by hurricanes, but I hope to avoid any direct hits!
ReplyDeleteHey James!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations...and good luck! It is sad that you are leaving Virginia. Maybe one day I'll get my PhD and be as cool as you are :)
Farrah
Congrats.. now its time to save the manatees!
ReplyDeleteHopefully you'll get to sail in Florida. Thanks for opening my eyes to VA as a sailing destination.
Sophia
Doesn't the manatee kind of look like a guest on the Ricki Lake show?
ReplyDelete"Uh, Ricki, I'm here because I'm endangered."
Then one of those mean people in the audience would offer up the advice, "Yeah, I want to say something to the sea pig!"
"That's sea cow..."
"Whatever. Sea pig, you gotta get yourself an education and a job!"
"Uh, I live in the ocean."
"It just so happens you live in the ocean 'cause you ain't got no job!"
"I don't know what you're -"
"You gotta get in Weight Watchers, some kinda program!"
"I have a layer of blubber to keep my body warm in the water..."
"Whatever, talk to my hand."
"Uh, I don't have a hand"
Aaron is very creative, and I think he watches WAY too much TV. Although, one could probably watch 30 seconds of the Ricki Lake show and realize that that's all that happens on it. (3x "that" in 4 words... top that!)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the PhD, Dr!
You're stoked you have a Kona for FL sailing! I bet you'll get out every day down there!
Farrah- No, you will never be as cool as me. :P
ReplyDeleteSophia- Thanks. :)
Aaron- LOL :D
Andy- Yeah, man. I was looking at Fort Pierce on Google earth the other day and mentally planning all my windsurfing there. I think it will involve a lot of light-wind ocean sailing on the Kona.
